CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Methos
Age: 5,000+ years - by his own statement, he does not remember farther back and isn't certain of his age. Information that is considered generally non-canon would put him at about 5,300. He appears to be in his early thirties.
Canon: Highlander
Canon Point: End of S5E11 "Comes a Horseman"
Character Information:
Five millennia of snark and subterfuge.
Personality: Five thousand years gives a lot of time to explore the facets of life, and Methos carries his age and his experiences with him on a daily basis. There's nothing simple in how he regards the world; no bright-line Good or Evil -- he's danced all along the spectrum, and knows there is no simple binary. Particularly because he has a keen mind for strategy and drama, he often sees how a seemingly good action can build toward a bad result, or how a superficially evil action can in the end bring about good. Do this, and then that happens, and here is the end result. Patterns play out over the course of years, decades, centuries, and cause and effect continue to ripple. Even his overriding motive, the one thing that can easily be said to be most important to him -- survival -- is something he will occasionally set aside when his keenly thoughtful mind tells him that the end result of putting himself in danger is worth the risk.
His thoughts, therefore, tend to be complex: there isn't one answer or one way, there are many, and to him, it's wisest to seek the course not necessarily with the least potential for bad ends, but for the greatest potential for good ones.
With all that said, he doesn't seem to be terribly impressed with himself for his way of looking at the world. He's not brave, in the classical sense, and he would much rather run from a fight than engage in it. It's only when he's backed against the wall -- such as by Kronos, who coolly threatens and has the ability to pursue Methos no matter how far he flees -- that Methos will genuinely stand his ground and prepare to fight. Otherwise? Bringing a gun to a knife fight, or the mortal police, or just about any tool in his arsenal, is a great way to get out of danger, to Methos' way of thinking. He's more focused on survival than on nebulous concepts of "honor" or "sportsmanship." He doesn't seem to regard his long survival as any sort of virtue -- he's not special or different in being "the world's oldest man," although his predilection for the name 'Adam' is a sly nod to his position in the Immortal world. When someone else crops up claiming to be Methos, the World's Oldest Immortal, the genuine Methos shrugs and seems to think it's funny more than anything else. Let someone else draw off the attention of all the Immortals longing for his head! It isn't like the use of the name is some kind of honor. He just is.
Because of that, there's a pleasant lack of arrogance to him, although he is occasionally given to boast about the people he has known and the places he has been over the course of his life. He's "just a guy," but at the same time, he claims to have stood on the same stage as Julius Caesar and the Rolling Stones, and he'll rattle off the names of famous people he has known throughout history -- though it's worth pointing out that there's no way to know if he's being truthful. Methos has a taste for teasing, sarcasm, even what could be called trolling. (Though of course in the 90s we didn't call it that.) His humor tends to be straight-faced lies and exaggerations -- the simple fact of being essentially his own Watcher by being head of the Methos Chronicles is exactly his sort of ironic humor. "I'm in charge of finding myself, and I make sure it never happens."
From the sound of it, Methos should be (and often is) essentially a self-centered man -- not necessarily selfish, but rather focused on himself, his immediate environment, and on his own survival and wellbeing. And for the most part that's true. However, five millennia of staying alive by hook or by crook have not destroyed a basic level of caring about the lives of others -- rather, it seems they've developed it, from his time as Death back in the Bronze Age through to his development as a doctor and an abolitionist at least in heart, if not in activity (there's no canon information indicating that he participated in abolitionist activism, but the sentiments he has expressed onscreen show clearly his disgust at the thought of human beings as property). He struggled and took risks to save the life of a mortal woman he loved, and equally took risks to save MacLeod when necessary.
At the end of the day, he is exactly what he says he is: just a guy, far older than most, but quintessentially unchanged by his long years. He is calculating and thoughtful, but not passionless; self-interested and occasionally a jerk, but not narcissistic; a man who tries to do his best in the world, but doesn't always succeed. He just happens to be about as old as the oldest parts of the Bible, that's all.
